Kids Orthodontics

Early orthodontic care helps guide your child’s developing smile and can prevent more complex problems later in life.

Kids Orthodontics at B Orthodontics

Early Assessment.
Healthy Development.
Confident Smiles.

Children’s teeth and jaws are constantly growing, and that’s exactly why the right orthodontic care at the right time can make such a powerful difference. At B Orthodontics, we specialise in assessing and guiding young smiles, identifying concerns early and using targeted, age appropriate treatment to help your child develop into a healthy, confident bite.

Whether your child has crowded front teeth, a crossbite, protruding teeth or a persistent habit such as thumb sucking, an early specialist assessment gives you clarity and peace of mind. In many cases, simple, well-timed intervention now can reduce the complexity, length and cost of treatment in the future.

Why Choose Early Intervention?

Early orthodontic treatment isn’t always about straightening every tooth straight away. It’s about recognising how your child’s teeth, jaws and bite are developing, and acting at exactly the right moment to prevent or reduce future problems. Common concerns we assess and treat in children include:

  • Crowded or overlapping teeth, both baby and adult
  • Protruding front teeth, which are more vulnerable to injury
  • Crossbites, where upper and lower teeth don’t line up correctly
  • Underbites or pronounced overbites affecting jaw growth
  • Missing, extra or unusually shaped teeth
  • Spacing issues that may affect how adult teeth come through
  • Oral habits such as thumb sucking, finger sucking or prolonged dummy use
  • Narrow upper jaws that may benefit from gentle early expansion

Benefits of Early Intervention

  • Better use of growth. Treating while the jaw is still developing allows us to guide growth rather than work around it later.
  • Simpler future treatment. Early intervention often means shorter, less complex orthodontic treatment during the teenage years.
  • Reduced need for extractions. Creating space early can sometimes avoid the need to remove adult teeth later.
  • Improved oral health. Correcting crowding and bite issues makes it easier for your child to clean their teeth properly.
  • Protection from injury. Repositioning protruding teeth reduces the risk of trauma from falls or contact sports.
  • A confident start. Addressing visible concerns early can make a real difference to your child’s self esteem.
  • Long term value. Early treatment often means less time, effort and overall cost down the track.

How Kids Orthodontics Works

At B Orthodontics, orthodontic care for children is built around three key elements:

  1. Early specialist assessment from around age 8 to 10, once the front adult teeth have come through
  2. Careful monitoring of tooth and jaw development, with regular growth check ups when active treatment isn’t yet needed
  3. Targeted, interceptive appliances used only when and where they’ll deliver real, lasting benefit

Depending on your child’s individual needs, early treatment may involve:

  • Expanders to gently widen a narrow upper jaw and create space for incoming adult teeth
  • Partial braces on selected teeth to correct specific alignment concerns
  • Habit appliances to help stop thumb or finger sucking
  • Functional appliances to guide jaw growth and improve bite relationships
  • Space maintainers used when baby teeth are lost too early

Importantly, not every child who attends a consultation needs treatment straight away. For many, the right approach is simply to watch, monitor and reassess at regular growth reviews until the ideal moment arrives.

5 Simple Steps

Your Child's Orthodontic Journey

1
Initial Consultation

Your child’s orthodontic journey begins with a relaxed, friendly consultation. We’ll examine their teeth and bite, take digital photographs, and use a 3D intraoral scanner (and, where needed, X-rays) to understand exactly how their smile is developing. Most importantly, we’ll take the time to make your child feel completely at ease.

2
Personalised Recommendation

After the assessment, your orthodontist will clearly explain what we’ve found, what (if anything) needs attention now, and what to expect in the coming years. There are generally three possible outcomes: active treatment now, a growth monitoring plan, or no treatment required at this stage.

3
Active Treatment (if required)

If early treatment is recommended, we’ll design a plan tailored to your child’s age, cooperation level and clinical needs. Appointments are kept short, positive and stress free, with plenty of encouragement and support along the way.

4
Growth Monitoring

For children who don’t need immediate treatment, we’ll schedule growth reviews every 6 to 12 months. These visits allow us to catch changes early and act at exactly the right moment if and when treatment becomes necessary.

5
Transition to Comprehensive Treatment (if needed)

As your child moves into their teenage years and all adult teeth have come through, we’ll reassess to determine whether a second phase of comprehensive treatment, such as braces or clear aligners, is the right next step towards a beautifully aligned adult smile.
